Where can I watch AFL (Australian Rules Football) on Khao San Road, Bangkok?
It was Anzac Day. If you are looking at this answer you probably know what ANZAC Day is. If not, it commemorates a Australian and New Zealandish military campaign in Gallipoli, Turkey (then the Ottoman Empire) during World War I. If you want to know more, wikipedia it or something. Most important for my purposes here is that there is always an afternoon AFL (Australian rules football) match on that day between Collingwood and Essendon. It's a pretty big deal sporting event in Australia, so it should be easy to find in an area with lots of Australian tourists, right? Nope.
Around the city there are a number of sports bars that would be showing the game. But as you may know, Khao San Road, where the backpackers live, is not really close to anywhere. Traffic makes heaing to any of those locations a battle. So I was going to find a place on KSR. Walking the stretch, there were a number of bars with big TVs. After asking around, I found that most of them did not have the Australia Network in their sattelite package and Australia network is how most of us watch football out here.
After walking KSR for a while I gave Mulligan's a try. It's an upstairs bar. Looks like a normal Irish Pub that you would find anywhere except Ireland. most importantly they had the AFL on. And there were actually a couple (2) Aussies watching the game. Beer was expensive. A pint of Tiger ran USD5 and Kilkenney USD8. But at least the footy was on...
